February 19, 2012 The Glory of Christ
2.19.12
Ex. 19:16-20; 24:15-18; 33:18-23; 34:29-33; 40:34-38
Mark 9:2-9
notice the elements from Exodus here
1. high mountain: place of God’s revelation of himself, Moses went up to see the revelation, Jesus went up to be revealed,
the revelation of God is Jesus
2. radiance of God: the light and brightness of God — Jesus is God– Godness showing
Dan 7:9
“As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels were all ablaze.”
Moses saw the glory, Jesus is the glory
Moses reflected radiance, Jesus radiates light from inside for he is God
3. prophets: both encountered God on the mountain, now they encounter Jesus
Jesus is the completion of all the work of the prophets of the OT, the God and salvation and Messiah they prophesied
4. tents: we don’t need tabernacles
Jesus is tabernacle, meet with God here
5. cloud: presence of God
Jesus is the presence of God
6 voice: speaking out of the cloud, God’s word: “this is my beloved son”
rather than giving a message, God says “listen to my son”
the son is preaching a gospel about what he has come to accomplish through his death and resurrection: listen, this is your salvation!
Peter testified later about this
2 Peter 1:16-18
“We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.”
You must see the light of the glory of Jesus Christ every day (not physically/ in heart)
As Moses saw the glory on the mountain, as Elisha saw the fiery chariot,
as the disciples saw the light of Jesus…
2 Corinthians 4:3-6
you must see the light of the glory of Jesus Christ every day.
God must shine the light of Jesus in your heart.
The question we must ask is, “How can I see the glory of Christ today?” HOW?
The one word answer is “worship.”
Because Jesus is God he must be worshiped.
I have downplayed worship in my life.
Some of you have never worshiped.
You think you have worshiped today,
but haven’t today and you never have.
You can’t worship until you see the glory of Jesus and adore him.
You see worship as icing, nice to have but not essential.
Worship is not on your to do list.
You show up here but not to worship.
As far as important activities in your life it does not even come to mind.
What about today? What keeps you from worshiping? What is more important?
Lunch? Dinner?
Worship of Jesus is more important than eating lunch. Taking care your children.
Cleaning the house.
Think about the rest of the week? What keeps you from worshiping?
Worship is more important than paying the bills. getting good grades.
Everything good begins with worship.
So worship must be first.
three different contexts:
1.alone
2.house (family, friend, small group)
3.public assembly (worship service)
several ways to worship:
1.listening to scripture, listening to preaching
2.reading (private meditation, public in the liturgy)
3.eating the Lord’s Supper
4.singing (praise)
5.praying (intercession, thanksgiving, praise)
taking a fast, retreat, or sabbath in order to worship
Without worship of Jesus–
you will have beliefs in your head
rituals you perform
and moral behavior
but no love for Jesus and therefore it will be all external only: empty and dead.
faith, love, hope, joy, peace
only come though worship of Jesus
Jesus is the son of God bringing his beauty to ugly places, his light to dark places.
bringing his salvation,
for he is God and he has come to us
to bring us to God
There is joy in worshiping his light and beauty even in dark and ugly places.
“What you think will make you happy is what keeps you from being happy.”
What will change you and make you happy is seeing the beauty of Christ.
2 Kings 2:11-12
2 Kings 6:15-17
behold Christ is with you today
behold his glory
behold his salvation that he brings
let us pray like Elisha prayed that we will see his glory today and every day
